B.o.B. - Nothin’ On You (piano cover by Chauan)
classical, hip-hop

There’s a bunch of piano covers of B.o.B.’s Nothin’ On You out there but I find this one the classiest and most serene.

The XX - Intro
chill-out, indie-rock, post-punk revival

Maybe it’s because I have a lot more free time on my hands, but I’ve found the Winter Olympics to be much more exhilarating than past Olympics (also probably because I boycotted the Beijing one and the Turin one was a disaster). This song is currently being played in an ad featuring short-track speed skater Apolo Ohno and has been stuck in my head ever since I’ve heard it.

Snow Patrol feat. Martha Wainwright - Set the Fire to the Third Part
alternative rock

Martha Wainwright’s country/folk type of voice contrasts really nicely with Gary Lightbody’s otherwise uninteresting drawl. You’ll hear a clip of this song in the trailers for the movie, Dear John, which is where I first heard of it.

Lady Gaga - Bad Romance (Electrolightz Freak Mix)
dance, electronic, pop

At first, I thought Lady Gaga was quirky. Then I thought she was just trying too hard. Now she’s back to awesome with her new album. This back-and-forth is exhausting.

Mariah Carey - H.A.T.E.U. (Jump Smokers remix)
club, dance, pop

Honestly, I have not been liking any of Mariah’s newer stuff (post-Rainbow) and her newest single release, H.A.T.E.U., is one of the dullest songs I have ever heard. Luckily, the Jump Smokers remix gives the song a well needed breath of fresh air and makes it surprisingly catchy.

Jay Sean - One Night
bhangra, hip-hop, pop

So apparently Jay Sean now has the number one hit on the charts with “Down”. What I didn’t know was that he’s actually Asian (real name: Kamaljit Singh Jhooti) and British (not that that means anything). Seriously, when was the last time anyone Asian, brown or yellow, topped the Billboard charts?

What is it about ‘Lucia Di Lammermoor’ that makes it fit so well in a techno arrangement? The obvious comparison is the Diva Dance from the movie, The Fifth Element, but it’s also rearranged on the Gankutsuou soundtrack as well.

The fact that a male is able to sing this is also f’ing incredible.

Bond - Winter
classical crossover, dance

This year, Peugeot commissioned Bond, the greatest selling string quartet of all time, to reinterpret Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” as part of their marketing for the 308CC, a cabriolet with a retractable hard-top.

Apocalyptica - Hope, Vol. 2
cello metal, instrumental rock, symphonic heavy metal

After being entranced by Kseniya Simonova’s sand animation videos on YouTube, I went searching for the music used in her performances. Apparently, the music being played is Apocalyptica, a Finnish band made of classically trained cellists with a style that can really only be described as ‘kick-ass’.

But in this heart of darkness
Our hope lies lost and torn;
All flame like love is fleeting
When there’s no hope anymore
